Why Nuclear Is Powering Up Again

AI, SMRs, and Big Bank Investments Are Driving the Surge

If you haven’t heard, nuclear energy is back in the spotlight, and it’s not just because of environmental concerns.

First off, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are getting a lot of attention right now.

SMRs aren’t your typical massive nuclear plants. SMRs are smaller, more efficient reactors that are easier and faster to build.

Here’s a diagram, courtesy of Wikipedia to give you an idea:

They provide reliable, steady power without the need for huge infrastructure like traditional reactors. Companies like Google (GOOG) are already looking at using SMRs to power their data centers, especially as the demand for power skyrockets with all this AI growth.

SMRs could be the solution to prevent those annoying brownouts and ensure everything keeps running smoothly.

And right now, global banks are jumping on board the nuclear bandwagon, too. Last year, at the COP28 conference, they made a big push for tripling nuclear energy by mid-century.

The whole idea is to reduce greenhouse emissions, and nuclear is a key piece of that puzzle. It’s not just politics either — money is being invested, and that’s driving serious momentum.

Now, you might have heard about Three Mile Island, the site of the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history back in 1979, reopening.

That’s happening, but it’s going to cost $1.6 billion just to get it back online. Personally, I think it makes more sense to build new SMRs instead. For that kind of money, you can avoid dealing with the “cobwebs” of an old plant and get something modern and more efficient.

So what’s really pushing the sudden demand? It’s not just COP28 and their environmental goals, it’s also AI.

Data centers require tons of power, and the grid can only handle so much. With the rise of AI, the need for reliable, constant energy is more important than ever. Nuclear is becoming the go-to option for companies looking to power their operations without interruptions.

Nuclear offers stability and isn’t tied to fluctuating prices or geopolitical issues like some of the fossil fuels. That’s why I think nuclear energy is going to keep growing, and it’s something investors should be watching closely.

So, whether it’s for clean energy or simply reliable power, nuclear is here to stay — and it’s only getting stronger from here.

P.S. Speaking of nuclear… I’ve had my eye on this coming surge. And here’s how I plan to play it.
