DECEMBER 3, 2024

Howdy y’all!

I thought to kick off the month of December, as far as trading is concerned, I’d give a little preview of some key dates and things to prepare for in the month to come.

Then, we’ll have a discussion about what the second best Christmas movie is (because the best isn’t up for debate).

If you like this format, let me know, and I’ll bring it back every month!

Key Dates for December
Tuesday, 12/3: JOLTs Job Openings
Wednesday, 12/4, 1:00 PM ET: Geof Smith shares his #1 breakout stock for 2025*
Friday, 12/6: Non Farm Payrolls and Unemployment Rate
Wednesday, 12/11: CPI
Thursday, 12/12: PPI
Wednesday, 12/18: Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision (2:00 PM) and Press Conference (2:30 PM)
Friday, 12/20: Core PCE
Tuesday, 12/24: Christmas Eve, markets close at 1:00 PM 🎅
Wednesday, 12/25: Christmas Day, Markets closed 🎄

* Note: A year ago, 12/7/2023, Geof Smith released his big, bold prediction that 2024 would be the year of the Gold Supercycle — and we saw the best year for gold since 1979! Now, he’s gonna share his breakout pick for the year ahead — sign up here to save a seat!

This will be an interesting month with the Fed decision coming a week ahead of Christmas. The right dominoes falling at the right time could create a heck of a Santa Claus Rally — but I think it’s too soon to count on anything yet.

Are Santa Claus Rallies Real?

Speaking of Kris Kringle, you’ve probably heard about the “Santa Claus Rally” before, but what is it, really? Well, in short, it’s the theory that stocks consistently go UP in the final weeks of the year, leading up to or following up on the Christmas holiday (depending on who you ask).

Now, of course, it doesn’t have anything to do with the holiday per se (strong retail sales numbers from the holidays wouldn’t be reflected until Q1 earnings reports), but it’s a fun name for a phenomenon — but does it really happen?

This graphic from 2018 shows us that we typically see a Santa Claus Rally effect three out of every four years.

A 75% success rate is pretty conclusive when it comes to trading, so we should generally expect that these rallies will come to pass.

With that said, I’m not sure it can do a ton to inform your trading strategy, because it’s such a general phenomenon.

Perhaps a “rising tide lifts all ships sleighs” mindset is the right one here though!

The Second Best Christmas Movie

Let’s close with this discussion: what’s the second-best Christmas movie?

I ask for “second” best because obviously, Home Alone takes the top spot — that’s really not up for debate…

The score by John Williams. The incredible comedy dynamic of Joe Pesci and Macaulay Culkin. The poetic redemption arc of Mr. Marley? It’s all just perfect.

But the options for #2 are plentiful.

I’ve got a soft spot for It’s a Wonderful Life, I love all versions of The Grinch, and I’ll be honest, after being a pessimist for a few years, Elf is really rising up my rankings.

But what’s YOUR #1?

All jokes aside, there’s no wrong choice for your favorite Christmas Movie…

So I thought it’d be fun to create this quick survey and get you to share your favorites! And I also threw in a chance for you to ask our experts your Q&A questions!

Fill it out if you get a chance — I think it’ll be fun!

But before you do, let me clarify: I said there was no wrong answer, but there actually is. Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie. So if you put that down, we can’t be friends. 😉

To your prosperity,

Stephen Ground
