August 2, 2023 Recently, Sam Altman, founder of ChatGPT, was summoned to Washington to brief Senators on what the AI revolution will mean for America. One Senator, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, played a deep fake of his voice created by AI. He asked about the potential for disinformation and AI-fueled crime. But those weren’t his biggest fears… The Senator said his biggest nightmare in the long term “is the job loss that AI could cause.” Then he told Altman, “Let me ask you what your biggest nightmare is.” Altman didn’t say… though he did admit to being spooked by how far the technology has come and agreed with the need for regulation. I don’t know what Altman’s biggest nightmare is… but I can guarantee you it isn’t millions of jobs being lost to AI. After all, when AI takes over to that extent, it will make him very rich. But for millions of American workers—and 300 million workers worldwide, according to Goldman Sachs —it’s a different story.
